How to Title Your eBook Effectively

Mitch Woodhead

July 11, 2013

There can be significant differences in your approach to choosing a title for your ebook and your approach to choosing a title for print publication. Regardless of what type of ebook you write, you want people to discover it online, even if they don’t know about it or aren’t looking for it specifically. In order for readers to find your ebook online when they search for your topic, how you title your ebook is crucial: it needs to be search-engine friendly. How People Search In the earliest days of ecommerce and online shopping, consumers simply typed in the very basic parameters of what they were looking for. A person might have been able to type in “container garden” and very easily have found what they were looking for. As ecommerce businesses and websites have continued to proliferate, filtering through the “noise” of the Internet has become more difficult, and consumers have responded by customizing their search efforts. Instead of typing in “container garden,” a consumer might now type in “how to grow a container garden on an apartment balcony.” The closer your title comes to meeting the parameters of the consumer’s search, the more likely your ebook will be to appear in the results. In other words, rather than title your book “Container Gardens for the Beginner,” you might achieve better visibility (and therefore more sales) with a title like “How to Grow a Container Garden on an Apartment Balcony” or “How to Grow a Container Garden in a Small Space.” Enhancing Your eBook Title’s Visibility By selling your ebook on your own website and blogging about your ebook regularly, incorporating the terms readers will most likely use to search for the topic, you can increase the likelihood of appearing in the results. It all begins, though, with having a good title for your ebook. So while you might be drawn toward an esoteric or otherwise elusive title, if you want to be seen, use your title to spell out plainly what it is you want readers to look for when they find you.
