Writing fiction can be enormously challenging. While nonfiction eBooks tend to draw from personal experience and knowledge, fiction requires different skills, more creativity, and often more planning. Writing fiction eBooks creates new opportunities for indie authors to explore, offering the possibility to create something never before read. To get started writing fiction:
Settle Down with a Good Book
A good fiction writer starts as a good reader. Don’t just read fiction from the genre in which you want to write; the trick is to read absolutely everything you can get your hands on. If you’re writing fantasy, read romance, mystery, or science fiction. Don't trap yourself in one genre.
Avoid Distractions
When writing fiction, resist the urge to be distracted. Shut down your internet access and ignore your social media during times that you’ve reserved for your writing. The internet is a distraction that can squander the creative time you have set aside that is essential for your fiction writing. As well, distractions may inadvertently influence your writing with ideas that have already been done.
Write with Confidence
Indie authors are often their own worst critics. Have confidence in your writing, and go forward with the assurance that success in your work of fiction is possible. Fiction is a genre where you can write whatever you like, without necessarily adhering to boundaries or rules. Your story should begin to unravel itself, if you’re confident in where the tale is going.
Fiction is a great way for an eBook writer to spread their literary wings, and in the next part of this series, we will delve into the basic construction and planning of fiction writing.
